HOW TO EMULATE OLD GAMES...

Things you will need: game files(i.e. the files that would normally be on a disc or cartridge), (for some emulation programs) a BIOS file for that console, and an emulator.

WHERE TO GET GAME FILES:

Vimm's Lair is one of the best, most trusted sources for games, and also has resources and instructions for emulating. CDRomance has a section for fan-made, pre-patched game files, and BIOS files under 'Extras.'

My Abandonware
is another source for old games, though the process for running old PC games is different from emulating consoles.

EMULATORS:

Vimm's Lair has a section about emulation that I recommend reading if this is all new to you, but I'll share how I've emulated the games I've played so far. If you run into problems, please read existing documentation for the specific emulator you are trying to use!

My most used emulators are DuckStation (PS1 emulator) and PCSX2 (PS2 emulator). These two are very similar (PCSX2 has received development contributions from DuckStation) and are practically 'plug-and-play,' once you are set up, they are extremely stable and fast, with high compatibility rates. Emulating PS1 & 2 games has never been easier.

Follow the steps for setting these up (including having your BIOS files ready), create a folder to act as your game directory, and they will automatically detect games in your chosen folder.
